St Vincent de Paul Coolum Conference
A Special Thank You:
St Peter’s Conference would like to thank the parishioners and community for generous donations and support for our fund-raising activity during the past year. It is this support that enables the Coolum Beach Conference to carry out its work of supporting needy families and the disadvantaged in our local Coolum district. Our underlying principle for support is to give a “hand up” not a “hand out”. Locally over the past 12 months, the Conference made 250 home visits to meet and support 478 people in our community who sought emergency assistance from the Society.
Financially, this assistance totalled $46,955 which went towards providing a range of emergency support such as food and basic necessities parcels, travel assistance such as Go Cards, emergency accommodation arrangements and importantly, education support for disadvantaged families.
In 2022, we were able to provide education assistance to support 182 students across 131 families. This assistance totalled $26,375 and comprised of grants to meet the meet “back to school costs”; bursaries (3) for deserving students in Years 6 and 12; and finally contributions to meeting the cost of purchasing student computers.
We are grateful for the advice and support from Guidance Officers at each of the State Schools in our area (noting that there are currently no Catholic Schools in our St Peter’s Conference area).
We believe that working in partnership with the local schools and their professional, caring staff enables the Society to have the positive impact on some of their most disadvantaged students.
St Peter’s Conference Coolum and the St Gerard Majella Conference at Maroochydore each celebrated their 40 year anniversary in 2022. A very popular and enjoyable joint St Peter’s and St Gerard Majella
Conferences Anniversary Mass was celebrated at Stella Maris Church on 9 November 2022. Following Mass presided by Fr Peter, there were presentations on each Conference’s highlights over past 40 years, talks on Homelessness and Education initiatives being undertaken locally and an insight into Vinnies Retail. Thank you to all involved in the organising of this joint Anniversary.
Sounds of celebration concert:
In November last year and in collaboration with the Waves of Harmony community choir and Coolum State High School, another very successful and professional Sounds of CelebraƟon Concert was
conducted. This event raised $3,500 for the St Peter’s Conference. Again, special thank you to all involved.
We still were able to assist 32 individuals and families with huge Christmas Hampers in December. Most hampers were contributed by regular donors who donate generously to the hamper appeal every Christmas. We are so
grateful for their help. Again in 2023 we will continue the tradition of the Christmas Hamper appeal.
Our St Peter’s Conference is a great group of friendly and committed members, but as with all parish volunteer groups, new members are always most welcome and urgently needed.
We think that the challenge of assisting the disadvantaged and vulnerable in our local community is both valuable and personally rewarding. Should you like to know more about the Conference or better still become a member, please feel free to chat with one of our members (wearing either a blue Vinnies name tag or the blue Vinnies’ shirt) after Mass; email us ; or ring the Marshall Morison (Conference President) on 0427 791 960.
If you feel you cannot help directly with our Conference work at Coolum, but would still like to support us, any donation will be gratefully accepted via the church Poor Box or as part of the upcoming Winter Appeal in June.
The St Vincent de Paul Society is an International
Catholic voluntary organisation of lay people, men
and women. The vocation of the Society members
is to follow Christ through service to those in need
and so bear witness to His compassionate and
liberating love. The Society serves those in need
regardless of creed, ethnic or social background,
health, gender or political opinions.
At our St Peter’s Conference at Coolum Beach, we
strive to meet the Society’s vocation for the people
of our local community.
