World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly
Within the Catholic Church, grandparents hold a unique and essential role. Their wisdom, faith, and life experience form the foundation upon which younger generations can build their spiritual lives. According to the Australian Catholic Mass Attendance Report of 2021, over 50% of regular Mass attendees are aged 50 and above. This demographic’s commitment to regular participation in the Mass highlights their importance in sustaining parish life and activities. The involvement of grandparents in the Church’s mission is not just beneficial but essential. Here’s how they can engage deeply and meaningfully in this calling.
One of the most important ways grandparents can contribute is by passing on the faith to their grandchildren. In a world where much of the secular influences have become rubbish relativism, the dedicated and faithful dispositions that grandparents possess serve as a much needed light for our world today. Sharing personal stories of faith, teaching prayers, and reading Bible stories together can instil a deep, lasting faith in young hearts. Grandparents can also encourage their grandchildren to participate in Mass, receive the sacraments, and engage in parish activities. Grandparents can demonstrate a life of prayer and devotion. By maintaining a visible and active prayer life, they set a positive example of a good Catholic way of life. Praying the Rosary, attending daily Mass, and participating in Eucharistic Adoration are ways grandparents can demonstrate the importance of a close relationship with God. Inviting (or making) grandchildren to join in these practices can also be an effective way to nurture their spiritual growth. Grandparents often have more time to volunteer than parents who might be busy with work and raising children. Their involvement in parish activities can be invaluable. Whether it’s volunteering to go on roster or assisting with church events and initiatives or assisting some other way, grandparents can bring their skills, time, and dedication to help the parish flourish. Their presence and participation can also inspire younger parishioners to get involved. In the mission of the Catholic Church, building a sense of community is crucial. Grandparents can play a significant role in bridging generational gaps within the parish. By engaging with youth, they can help create a more cohesive and inclusive church community. Their experiences and stories can provide valuable perspectives to younger members. The power of prayer should never be underestimated. Grandparents can become prayer warriors for their families, the Church, and our parish initiatives. Praying for the needs of the parish, the intentions of parishioners, and the global mission of the Church is an invaluable way grandparents can contribute. Joining or forming prayer groups can amplify this effort and grandparents can play a crucial role in nurturing vocations to the priesthood and religious life. By encouraging their grandchildren and younger parishioners in discerning their vocation, they can help ensure the future of the Church and Maroochydore parish. Sharing stories of saints, discussing the beauty of a life dedicated to God, and fostering an environment where children feel free to explore their calling can make a significant difference.
Grandparents are indispensable pillars in the mission of the Catholic Church. Their faith, wisdom, and dedication can light the way for the younger generations to be the saints they are called to be. By actively involving themselves in parish life, prayer, and the transmission of faith, they not only deepen their own spiritual journey but also enrich the lives of their families and the broader church community.
